EcoReefs are accessible to everyone around the globe at no cost. By sharing this knowledge, we can collectively contribute to the preservation of our precious waterways.

The Composition of an EcoReef

At its core, an EcoReef is a compilation of organic materials. Twisted branches, rocks, and rubble are bound together using a durable binder. This structure forms a protective ‘cave’, safeguarding flora and fauna from their inception through their juvenile stage until they become self-sufficient.

Here’s how it works:

• Twisted branches and organic materials interlock to create a meshed surface. This provides a platform for living organisms to adhere to.
• Rocks are used to weigh down the branches, ensuring stability.
• Binders are used to keep the rocks and branches together until nature takes over.
• Individual EcoReefs can interlock with others, creating a thriving enclave for biodiversity.

The Importance of EcoReefs

Our natural landscapes have been drastically altered due to various factors. Sloping lands have been cleared, leading to water ‘slides’ that erode everything in their path, carrying debris to the water’s edge and beyond.

However, we can reverse the effects of erosion, land degradation, and loss of fish habitat by:

• Implementing terrace farming on slopes,
• Encouraging seepage through root fissures to retain rainwater underground,
• Strategically creating dams that do not affect catchment areas, and
• Reintroducing bends in rivers to promote aquaculture.
